Artur Wiart

Artur Wiatr – a forester and environmentalist by education. By profession – a naturalist involved in the broadly understood nature protection. Since 1997, an employee of the Biebrza National Park. In his professional career in the Park, he worked as a ranger and department manager. He was involved in environmental education, ecotourism, cooperation with the local community, and international cooperation. He implemented nature protection projects. In earlier years, he was involved in the activities of non-governmental organizations e.g. the Polish Society of Nature Protection Service. Since December 2020, he has been the director of the Biebrza National Park.

Christopher Pham

Responsável pela candidatura dos Açores a área vital para a sobrevivência dos oceanos, Christopher Pham foi nomeado “campeão” na defesa deste mar por uma das mais importantes organizações de proteção ambiental do mundo.

Eva Giacomello

Eva Giacomello is a biologist, working as Assistant Researcher at the Institute of Marine Sciences – Okeanos, University of the Azores. She has a PhD in Evolutionary Biology from the University of Padua, Italy. Her research interests include fish ecology and biology, seamount management and conservation, marine ecosystem services. Eva started her scientific career studying the reproduction of fishes at the University of Padua. She then moved to the University of the Azores, broadening her knowledge and expertise of issues related to deep-sea resource management and conservation. She is currently working on the ecology of demersal and deep-sea fishes, and responses of fish communities to ecological pressures, with special emphasis on the Condor seamount marine protected area.

Inês Nobre

Inês Nobre, nascida em 1988, natural do Barreiro. Exerce funções de Vigilante da Natureza desde 2018. Nos primeiros dois anos, integrou a equipa de Vigilantes Natureza no Parque Natural da Ria Formosa e encontra-se até hoje na Área marinha do Parque Natural da Arrábida e na Reserva Natural do Estuário do Sado.
As suas missões diárias passam por: Monitorização da população residente de Roazes corvineiros do Estuário do Sado,
Acompanhamento e colaboração de projetos de investigação.
Fiscalização e sensibilização de toda a área marinha fazendo cumprir as regras de observação de cetáceos e regras do Parque Marinho Professor Luiz Saldanha.
Integra igualmente, os órgãos sociais da Associação de Guardas e Vigilantes da Natureza, como secretária da direção.

Marcelo Segalebra

Graduação: Licenciado en Gestión Agropecuária – UDE Montevidéu-Uruguai, (2000). Participou do Primer Curso Latinoamericano de Guardaparques en Áreas Naturales Protegidas – PROFEPA & FIG, México (1998). Foi pesquisador do Laboratório de Fauna e Unidades de Conservação – Universidade de Brasília (2012-2017). É membro da Comissão Mundial de Áreas Protegidas (CMAP/Brasil) da União Internacional para a Conservação da Natureza (UICN). Assessora empreendimentos na área da produção sustentável, manejo de recursos naturais e proteção de valores ambientais e culturais. Atuou como assessor técnico do projeto: Prevenção, Controle e Monitoramento de Queimadas Irregulares e Incêndios Florestais no Cerrado (Projeto Cerrado-Jalapão) (2013-2016). Coordenou e desenvolveu atividades de vigilância ambiental, expedições de campo, mapeamento de risco, monitoramento remoto, sensibilização comunitária, extensão, planejamento estratégico e capacitação. Nelson Pereira

1987 Concluiu a formação de Guarda da Natureza, em Manteigas, promovido pelo Serviço Nacional de Parques e Reservas e Conservação da Natureza.
A 2 de Fevereiro de 1988, ingressa em regime de contrato de trabalho, no SNPRCN, na Área de Paisagem Protegida de Sintra Cascais.
A 1 de Agosto de 1990, entra para os quadros de pessoal do SNPRCN como efetivo, mantendo-se a prestar serviço no APPSC.
Em 2003 transferido para a Reserva Natural do Estuário Tejo.
Em 2005 regressa agora ao Parque Natural de Sintra Cascais.
A 4 de Fevereiro de 2006 ingressa por transferência efetiva para Região Autónoma da Madeira, para prestar serviço no Serviço do Parque Natural da Madeira, hoje Instituto das Florestas e Conservação da Natureza, onde se mantém a exercer funções de Vigilante da Natureza.
Concluiu várias formações nas áreas da Conversão da Natureza e Monitorização das Espécies e geologia, como na área da informática.
Realizou várias palestras em estabelecimentos escolares, no primeiro ciclo, segundo ciclo e secundário.
Foi palestrante em várias jornadas técnicas promovidas pela APGVN.

Pedro Afonso

I am a Portuguese marine and fisheries biologist specializing in applied spatial ecology, whereby I employ rigorous analysis of empirical biological data to promote the conservation and sustainable exploitation of marine living resources. I earned my PhD in Zoology at the University of Hawaii (US) in 2007 under Fullbright, FLAD and FCT scholarships. I am a researcher at IMAR/OKEANOS – University of the Azores (Portugal) since 1997 and a guest researcher at Woods Hole Oceanographic Institution (US) since 2014. I published over 100 peer-reviewed papers and book chapters (86 ISI papers) scoring 29/65 H/H10 (23/47 ISI), including, in the last 5 years alone.
I lead research that develops novel demographic, biotelemetric and spatial modelling
approaches to identify and incorporate essential fish habitat in the optimal design of coastal, deep sea and pelagic Marine Protected Area networks, a key issue in marine conservation. In the last 5 years alone, this includes the PI/WP leader role in 9 national and 5 international (EU,  US) projects in the science-decision interface, and the coordination or participation in international ecology/biotelemetry research cruises in the Pacific and Atlantic Oceans.
I developed a solid network of international collaborations with key, state-of-the-art partners, which puts me in position to secure the strategic and tested contribution of 3 leading research groups/institutions that will significantly complement IMAR/Okeanos capacity for the research plan both in the scientific and technological components.
I lead the IMAR Biotelemetry Group and have done biotelemetry/biologging developments (testing and designing new tags, sensors, and techniques together with international partners in robotics and world leading manufacturers. I started and co-coordinate the recent European aquatic animal Telemetry Network (ETN), a strategic move for the future of european aquatic biotelemetrists and science.
I have most actively contributed to the recognized position that IMAR-UAz gained
internationally through research, supervision of 37 students and post-docs (19 in the last 5 yrs) and teaching of undergrad/graduate courses, developing laboratories and sea infrastructures, networking and disseminating internationally in fora and the media (TV series, newspapers, radio news and shows, the internet).

Rui Prieto

Rui Prieto is an Auxiliary Researcher at the Okeanos Institute of Marine Sciences (Un. Azores). Growing up in Brazil, Prieto was fascinated by the oceans from an early age, even though he lived four hours away from the nearest coastal town. Even before enrolling in the university, he was involved in marine research through internships with the Smithsonian Tropical Research Institute in Panama. He earned a bachelor’s in Marine Biology from the University of Algarve, Portugal, in 1997. He settled in the Azores islands where he pursued a career researching marine mammal behavior and ecology and earned his PhD in Marine Sciences. Among other achievements, he was awarded a prestigious National Geographic Explorer grant (2021). Prieto researches the social, behavioral, and physiological parameters of marine animals. With colleagues in the Azores Whale Lab within the Okeanos Institute, he pioneered the use of several biologging (automatically recording data from living organisms) and biotelemetry (remotely receiving data from living organisms) tools for studying cetaceans in Portugal. The resulting knowledge is instrumental to advance ecological theory and in aiding the development of policies for the sustainable use of the marine ecosystems.
